“If we say that we never sin, we are
only fooling ourselves, and refuse to accept the truth”
1 John 1:8
2. Sin breaks our close relationship with
God. It causes us to fear God and try to live our lives outside
of God’s will.
“All have sinned and fall short of God’s glorious
ideal.” Romans 3:23
3. When people have problems, they often try many different
ways of coping before turning to God.
“There are ways that seem right to humans, but they
only end in death.” Proverbs 16:25
4. Even when we know that our deepest need is God, we
often try wrong ways of getting to know Him.
III. What’s
the Solution?
1. Jesus has already addressed our sin problem!
Jesus Christ said, “I am the Way, the
Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through
me!” John 14:6
“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is
eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans
6:23
God Himself came to earth as a human being to bring us back
to Himself. If any other way would have worked, Jesus Christ would
not have had to come. The Way is a Person!
2. God did this for us because He loves us and wants us
to know Him.
“God demonstrated His love for us in that while we
were still separated from God by sin, Christ died for us”.
Romans 5:8
“For there is one God and one mediator between God
and people, the person Jesus Christ, who gave himself as a ransom
for all.” 1 Timothy 2:5
God has already done His part to restore our relationship
to him. God took the initiative. Now He waits for each of us to
individually accept what He has done.
IV. What Does God
Want Me To Do?
1. Admit that God has not had first place
in your life and ask Him to forgive your sins.
“If we confess our sins, God is faithful
and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from every
wrong.” 1 John 1:9
2. Believe that Jesus Christ died to pay the
penalty for your sins, that He rose again on Easter, and is alive
today.
“If you confess that Jesus is your Lord,
and you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
3. Accept God’s free gift of salvation.
Don’t try to earn it – you can’t.
“For it is by grace you are saved, through
faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift
of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9
Our relationship to God is not restored by anything we do,
but on the basis of what Jesus already did for us!
4. Invite Jesus Christ to be the director (“Lord”)
of your life. As you pray, invite the Holy Spirit to live within.
“To all who receive Him, He gives the right to become
children of God. All we need to do is to trust Him to save us. All
those who believe this are reborn…not a physical rebirth…but
from the will of God!” John 1:12-13
You can take these steps by praying a prayer of commitment
to God:
“Dear Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for loving me and inviting
me to share in a personal relationship with you. I confess that
I am a sinner and that my sins have separated me from you. I believe
that you died on the cross to save me from my sins and that you
rose from the dead to give me the gift of eternal life. By faith
I receive you into my life as the Forgiver of my sins and I commit
myself to you as the Leader of my life. Please fill me with the
Holy Spirit so that I can live for you from this day forward.
In your Name I pray. Amen”
“Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:13

Session Two:
A Process for Spiritual Growth
DYNAMICS FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Just as a newborn baby needs special care to grow
healthily, so also newborn believers in Jesus Christ need special
care so that they too can grow healthily! It is God’s desire
that all believers in Jesus Christ grow from spiritual infancy into
spiritual adolescence and ultimately into spiritual adulthood. The
following is a list of some of the dynamics that foster spiritual
growth.
I. SPIRITUAL BIRTH:
John 3:3
II. SPIRITUAL GROWTH:
1 Corinthians 3:1-2

FIVE CIRCLES
OF COMMITMENT
Our objective is to keep moving people toward
the center by encouraging personal spiritual commitments. Specifically,
we call people to three basic commitments:
THREE COMMITMENTS
1. THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITMENT...
…is a commitment to Christ and the First Presbyterian
Church family.
“You are members of God’s very own
family…and you belong in God’s household with every
other Christian.” Ephesians 2:19 (Living Bible)
“We are all parts of Christ’s Body,
and it takes every one of us to make it complete, for we each have
different work to do. So we belong to each other and need all the
others.” 2 Peter 3:18
2. THE MATURITY COMMITMENT…
…is a commitment to the habits necessary for
spiritual growth.
“Continue to grow in grace and knowledge
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
2 Peter 3:18
3. THE MINISTRY OR MISSIONS COMMITMENT…
…is a commitment to discovering and using
my God-given gifts and abilities in service to God and others,
or sharing the Good News with others.
“God has given each of you some special
abilities; be sure to use them to help each other…”
1 Peter 4:10 (Living Bible)
“Always be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
But do it with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter
3:15
Why do we have these COMMITMENTS? We become
what we are committed to!

Session Three
A Plan for Changing Our World
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES WHICH SHAPE OUR STRUCTURE
1. The Church continues Christ’s ministry
in order to accomplish Christ’s mission.
“Go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have
commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, even to the
end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20.
2. Church programs should be designed to accomplish
Christ’s mission.
“The Twelve gathered all the disciples
together and said, “it would not be right for us to neglect
the ministry of the word” of God in order to keep accounts.
Brothers, choose seven from among you who are known to be full
of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over
to them and will give our full attention to prayers and the ministry
of the word. This proposal pleased the whole group…so the
word of God spread; the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased
rapidly.” Acts 6:2-5a.
3. Christ’s Church should not be tradition-driven
or personality-driven, but rather Christ’s Church should be
purpose-driven!
Decisions about congregational structures, staff
job descriptions, officer positions, programming and scheduling
should all be evaluated on how well we’re accomplishing
the 5 biblically-based purposes (pages 21-22) and achieving God-honoring
results.

OUR BASIC BELIEFS
God: We believe in one living and
true God who exists in three distinct Persons-Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit-the same in substance, power, and eternity. God is the sovereign
Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect, powerful,
and loving.
Jesus Christ: We believe that Jesus
Christ is the Son of God, the second person of the Godhead. He took
upon Himself a human nature without sin, was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, arose from the dead,
returned to heaven, and is coming again.
Holy Spirit: We believe that the
Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead and proceeds from
the Father and the Son. He has come to glorify Jesus Christ and
to apply the saving work of Jesus Christ to our lives. He regenerates
people by His grace, convicts them of sin, moves them to repentance,
enables them to embrace Jesus Christ by faith, lives within all
believers in Jesus Christ, unites them in the church, and enables
them to live the Christian life.
The Bible: We believe that the entire
Bible is the Word of God written by men who were inspired by the
Holy Spirit. We look to the Bible as our final authority in all
areas of belief and practice.
Creation: We believe that God created
the world and all things for Himself. He created man-male and female-as
immortal souls in His own image.
Salvation: We believe that salvation
is a gift of God’s love received through faith alone by which
God forgives our sins, declares us righteous in His sight through
the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, adopts us as His beloved
children, and gives us eternal life.
The Church: We believe that the church
consists of those who by the grace of God and faith alone have become
children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, who alone is the
Head of the church.
The Sacraments: We believe that the
Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are instituted
by God. Baptism marks the admission of the person baptized into
the visible church. The Lord’s Supper is a commemoration of
the sacrifice of Jesus Christ upon the cross.
Our Mission: We believe that it is
the privilege and responsibility of everyone who hears and receives
the Gospel of Jesus Christ to share it with others in word and deed.
Christ’s Second Coming: We
believe that God has appointed a day when Jesus Christ will come
again to earth in great power and glory to take unto Himself all
those who have been saved by grace through faith alone. Those who
reject His salvation will forever be separated from the presence
of God.

THE SACRAMENTS
OF BAPTISM AND THE LORD’S SUPPER
AN OVERVIEW
1 .A sacrament is a sign and seal which Jesus commanded
us to do.
2. Most Protestant denominations recognize two sacraments:
Baptism
The Lord’s Supper (Communion)
Jesus said, “Go then, to all people
everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name
of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then teach
them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew
28:19-20
3. The sacraments are visible signs of our trust
in the inner working of God’s Holy Spirit.
“For all of you who were baptized into
Christ have put on Christ.” Galatians 3:27.
“Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide
in me, and I in them.” John 6:56.
4. The sacraments are public, not private in nature, for Christ
has chosen to mediate this grace through His church.
“For in the one Spirit, we are all baptized into
one body…Indeed, the body does not consist of one member,
but many.” 1 Corinthians 12:13-14
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
1. Baptism is a sign of the forgiveness we
receive through the grace of Jesus Christ, as we share in his death
and resurrection.
Baptism doesn’t make you a believer –
it shows that a person (and persons) already trusts in God’s
grace. Baptism does not “save” you, only your faith
in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring – it’s
the outward symbol of an inner commitment.
“By our baptisms then, we were buried
with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ
was raised from the dead…so also we may live a new life!”
Romans 6:4
2. Youth or adults who have not been baptized
before are encouraged to receive this sacrament when they make a
public profession in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.
“Those who believed and accepted his message
were baptized.” Acts 2:41
3. Parents who acknowledge Jesus as Lord are
encouraged to present their children for baptism, anticipating that
one day the children’s baptisms will be confirmed when they
make a public profession of faith in Christ.
There is strong biblical evidence that, in the New
Testament church, a whole household would immediately be baptized
when the head of the household acknowledged Jesus Christ as Lord.
They replied, “believe in the Lord Jesus
Christ and you will be saved – you and your household…At
that hour the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately
he and all his family were baptized.” Acts 16:31 &
33
4. When those already baptized make their
own profession of faith in Christ, they are not re-baptized, but
become confirmed members of the church. Adults who return to the
church after a time of spiritual hibernation need not be re-baptized.
Jesus said “My sheep listen to my voice;
I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and
they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”
John 10:27-28
THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
1. Baptism only needs to happen once but the
Lord’s Supper should be received regularly.
2. Like the Jewish Passover, the Lord’s
Supper is a covenant-celebrating meal which connects us to the event
which brought us salvation.
“This is my body, which is for you, eat
it in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:24
“This is the blood of the new covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
Matthew 26:28
3. Communion reminds us of Christ’s
presence.
Jesus said “I am the bread of life that
came down from heaven…whoever eats my flesh and drinks my
blood remains in me, and I in him.” John 6:41, 56
4. Communion reminds us of our future hope.
“For whenever you eat the bread and drink
the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes back.”
1 Corinthians 11:26
5. Communion reminds us of our connection
with the covenant family.
“The body does not consist of one member,
but many.” 1 Corinthians 12:14
6. In the Presbyterian Church, those who are
baptized in Jesus’ name and who trust in Jesus for their salvation,
are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper. Baptized children
who have been taught the meaning of the Lord’s Supper are
also invited to participate.
7. The Lord’s Supper is offered in different
settings and in different forms.
8. God calls us to prepare ourselves to receive
the Lord’s Supper.
“A person ought to examine himself before he eats of
the bread and drinks of the cup.” 1 Corinthians 11:28
HOW DO I PREPARE MYSELF TO RECEIVE THE LORD’S
SUPPER?
By:
1. Self Examination
1 Corinthians 11:27
2. Confessing My Sin
1 John 1:9
3. Recommitment
Romans
12:1
4. Restoring Relationships Matthew
2:23-24

OUR FORM OF CHURCH GOVERNMENT:
PRESBYTERIAN
Being a member of this denomination gives
us:
1. Identity:
We bear witness to a distinctive Reformed understanding of the Chri8stian
faith.
2. Accountability:
The congregation and its leaders are held responsible for their
faithfulness to Jesus Christ.
3. Resourcing:
We can accomplish Christ’s mission better in places near and
far away because we’re part of a national and international
team.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE
A MEMBER
The difference between “attendees” and
“members” can be summed up in one word: commitment.
We ask you to commit to membership for these reasons:
1. A Biblical Reason: Jesus Christ is committed
to the church!
“…Christ loved the church, and he gave
his life for it.” Ephesians 5:25
2. A Cultural Reason: It is an antidote to
consumerism!
We live in an age where few want to be committed
to anything…a job…a marriage…our country. This
attitude has even produced a generation of “church shoppers
and hoppers.” Membership swims against the current of America’s
“consumer” religion.” It is an unselfish decision.
Commitment always builds character.
3. A Practical Reason: It defines who we can
count on!
Every team must have a roster. Every school must
have an enrollment. Every army has an enlistment. Membership identifies
our family
4. A Personal Reason: It produces spiritual
growth!
The New Testament places a major emphasis on the
need for Christians to be accountable to each other for spiritual
growth. You cannot be accountable when you’re not committed
to any specific church family.
MY COMMITMENT:
1. I will protect the unity of Christ’s
Church…
…by seeking to live a Christ-like life.
…by acting in love toward other members and by refusing
to gossip.
…by giving constructive input and by following our leaders.
“Make sure that your everyday life is worthy of the
gospel of Christ.” Philippians 1:27
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths,
but only what is helpful for building others up according to their
needs...” Ephesians 4:29
“Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They
keep watch over you as people who must give an account. Obey them
so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would
be no advantage to you.” Hebrews 13:17
2. I will share in responsibility for Christ’s Church…
…by attending worship regularly and praying for our growth.
…by inviting the un-churched to attend and welcoming those
who visit.
…by seeking genuine Christian fellowship in a group or class.
“To the church…we always thank God for you and
pray for you.”
1 Thessalonians 1:2
“Go out into the country…and urge anyone you
find to come in, so that My House will be full.” Luke
14:23 (Living Bible).
“So, warmly welcome each other into the church, just
as Christ has warmly welcomed you; then God will be glorified.”
Romans 15:7 (Living Bible)
3. I will serve the ministry of Christ’s Church…
…by giving regularly a portion of my income
…by developing a servant’s heart and discovering my
gifts and talents.
…by being equipped to serve by my pastors.
“Each one, on the first day of each week, should set
aside a specific sum of money in proportion to what you have earned
and use it for the offering.”
1 Corinthians 16:2
“Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given
you.” 1 Peter 4:10
“God gave…some to be pastors and teachers to
prepare God’s people for works of ministry, so that the
body of Christ may be built up…” Ephesians 4:11-12

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER
We will arrange a brief meeting for the purpose of
introducing candidates for membership to the elders, at a special
meeting of the Session. After being introduced, you will be invited
to share briefly about yourself and about how you came to trust
in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord and what it means to you
to become a member of this church.
After meeting with the Session and being received
into membership at First Presbyterian Church, we will arrange a
time for you to be introduced at one of the Sunday worship services
with other new members.
Please fill out the membership profile sheet.
The main information will be for the church office, and portions
of the “biographical section” will be included in The
Good News for other church members to know more about you.

Session Four
A Purpose for Gathering as
First Presbyterian Church
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
“To Know Christ and To Make Him Known”
The Biblical Basis for Our Mission Statement…Why
We Exist as a Church!
The purpose of Christ’s church was expressed
in two key scriptures:
The Great Commandment: Jesus said,
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart…soul…and
mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second
is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and Prophets
hang on these two commandments…” Matthew 22:37-40
The Great Commission: Jesus said,
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Matthew 28:19-20
- To “Love God with all your heart” is WORSHIP
- To “Love your neighbor as yourself” is MINISTRY
- To “Go and make disciples” is EVANGELISM
- To “Baptize…” is to incorporate into FELLOWSHIP
- To “Teach them…all things” is DISCIPLESHIP
OUR PURPOSE STATEMENT
“The Purpose of the First Presbyterian Church
is to:
- Exalt God through worship
- Evangelize people in the name of Jesus Christ
- Encourage them through fellowship
- Educate them for discipleship
- Equip them for ministry and mission.”
OUR CORE VALUES
Integrity, Compassion, Enthusiasm, Excellence,
Commitment, Purpose, and Service

OUR STRUCTURE /
PURPOSE
WORSHIP
“Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”
Matthew 4:10
The center of our life as a church is worship. In addition to the
personal worship that each member offers throughout the week, we
gather together as a covenant family to worship God. Our goal at
all worship services is to help individuals worship God.
EVANGELISM - MISSION
“Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
But who can ask Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And
how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him?
And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells him?”
Romans 20:13-14 (Living Bible)
“…Yes, whatever a person is like, I try to find
common ground with him so he will let me tell him about Christ and
let Christ save him.” 1 Corinthians 9:22 (Living Bible)
Why First Presbyterian Church Must Continue to Grow
1. Because God loves people.
“The Lord…is patient, not wanting anyone to
perish, but wants everyone to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9
2. Because God commands us to reach out.
“Go out into the country…and urge anyone you
find to come in, so that My House will be full.”
Luke 14:23 (Living Bible)
3. Because God wants it to grow.
“Under Christ’s control, the whole Body is
nourished…and grows as God wants it to grow.”
Colossians 2:19 (Good News Bible)
Jesus said “I will build my church.” Matthew
16:18
Unbiblical Excuses for Not Growing
“God isn’t interested in numbers.”
“Our church wants quality not quantity.”
“Large churches are impersonal.”
FELLOWSHIP
Building Authentic Fellowship
We are being built into God’s household one room (small
group) at a time, as members gather for authentic fellowship.
“And now you are living stones that are being used
to build a spiritual house.”
1 Peter 2:5.
“And in Christ you too are being built together to
become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.” Ephesians
2:22
“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share
with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because
you had become so dear to us.”
1 Thessalonians 2:8
DISCIPLESHIP
“Let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ
and go on to maturity…” Hebrews 6:1
“Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ.” 2 Peter 3:18
CLASS 201: Discovering Spiritual Maturity

of you together form the one body of Christ and each of you
is a separate and necessary part of it.” 1 Corinthians
